If there's a hip-hop critique of Will Smith it's that he was never able to break out of that simplistic pre-1988 rap flow. He already sounded old school even in the late 80s and early 90s.
It aint summer until the DJ plays "Summertime". That song will never die. Also BRING BACK MURS ON THE BREAKDOWN!!
Me and Will Smith are almost exactly the same age, Sept-Dec same year. I'm a white guy that grew up listening to everything, my first taste of Rap was the Sugar Hill Gang, then came UTFO many more but I don't want to waste time on here. Then came DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince! Man I loved them guys! Back in those days all of us black and white listened to everything. You turn on your "boom box" and you could here TFP and Def Leppard in the same 15 minutes, then they would play Michael Jackson, and I loved his work too!!!! What did it mean then??? NOTHING! It meant you liked all types of music! Then in the end of 1988 came NWA, and I tried to listen to it, but it did not have the same effect as TFP, or Michael or LL UTFO. It pissed me off bad, the rap scene or hip hop however you want to put it became so culturally diverse that I refused to listen to it. It was almost like Racism took form as music. But wtf do I know, I only grew up with it and watched it unfold into the mess we have today…
I have to disagree. Will Smith is Hip-hop's Bill Cosby
MURS IS A SCIENTIST
The adoration for the "dark side" is not just native to the culture but to all pop culture… that's gotta sink in the subconscious if the masses, maybe its a factor on why we are so corrupted as society and individuals. Everyone wants to be Darth Vader but no one really is.
Urm! Educational rappers like KRS1?
I keep telling these guys how hard will smith is. Will Smith set his own path and mastered it. The problem is the hip hop fans. Plus will win that Tupac battle. Will is the biggest hip hop star ever with the girl and 2pac is dead.
Even this video cant get the love it deserves. Will's music is so underrated
Cus he is WACK AF
Shout out to Joyner Lucas for showing props to our heroes, while they are still alive.
No
Surprised u didn't mention mr niceguy
After the Will remix… I beleve every artist RESPECTS the hell out of my boy Will! The legend!(pun intended)
will just killed the remix, he is a legend
I feel inclined to agree, but not on the basis of just hating on the nice guy for being a nice guy.
Villains and antiheroes just seem more attractive and interesting to talk about, whether it's movies or books or personae. People just love the bad guy. It's this fascination with the darker side of humanity that for some reason keeps drawing us in…
I'm sure there's some literarary, philosophical, or psychoanalytic determination as to why. But I am not that organized in my thoughts to give an explanation, so I just take it as this social cultural that somehow grabs our attention and doesn't let go.
Had to rewatch after seeing that Will remix
haha whose here after will dropped with joyner
NOT THE JERSEY GIRL CLIP!?! ????
Hi guys, maybe you could try a video about the Theseus paradox in Rap,
I watched this video a year ago when it came out and I thought it was really insightful and it made me rethink Will Smith. For what it is worth I am a 42 year old white guy that went to high school in the 90's when hip hop was exploding. I came back to this video when Joyner Lucas did the song/video "Will" because I remembered how much I liked this HipHopDX video and it made me think.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shared this video. I genuinely feel like every hip hop fan needs to watch this. Even if just for some perspective.
Will. One of the greatest ever
But wait, weren't all of his lyrics ghost written?
Gangsta rappers hate will smith cuz will smith dissed em in an interview on bet I think
BECAUSE NAS WROTE GET JIGGY WITH IT
The audience of hip hop is usually african americans n mostly males dont ge me wrong females too but in correlation with the artist n the crowd its usually like young african american males which are either hard asf cuz the hood is a warzone or wanna be hard cuz it seems cool especially todays which is why "Nice rappers" just dont exist anymore cuz the audience for nice rappers dont really exist outside of the originals who are all older than any of the new hip hop community
Shit summertime slap he was in my top 10 way before this video
I used to love will smith till i saw how his kids turned out. Something weird goin on there.
Bro I love Will Smith because I grew up on him but I would never fix my lips to say he's in my top ten.
Ice cube goat video please
Thanks for this will video
This is starting to happen to Chance too I swear.
Because he thinks he's holier than thou for not cussin'. Fuck him. Even though he cusses in movies. So what? Movies are a better representation of art than rap music?
Just got my Bel-Air hoodie in, Will Gates top 5 dead or alive.
Dont test nobodys gangster ????
He remind me of bill withers if he did the harlem shake at macys and hang with the substitute teachers at shaunie o'neals college ?????
Good Actor, but Rapping well, he's not Bad. Lil wayne unlike cant play a Damn Note.
"Will Smith doesn't have to cuss in his rap to sell records
Well I do
So fuck him
and fuck you too"
-Real Slim Shady
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – A Nightmare On My Street was the first rap song i was allowed to listen to. I was like 5 or 6 and my dad had the cd is his car. I am now listening to it and it is bringing back so many good memories. I am very happy now.
Bring back Murs
I love Will Smith as a rapper, a human and as an actor. He is so wholesome.
He will be always the Prince of Bel Air to me , GOAT
