The vision of George Lucas was great. His story is based on world's mythology, it appeals and it is loved by everyone. But beyond it's main story, it is rather pointless to go too deep into the details of Lucas' universe, because it is not a well detailed sandbox. A single man in the 70's couldn't think to everything (and now it is even stranger that huge corporations with a vast number of employees are able to do even less because of mindless politic agenda).
The fact that the military is so expensive in the star wars universe is one of the problems. Why it is so expensive? With space mining and very advanced technology, raw resources should cost next to nothing. The Energy to maintain the ships should basically be free, with fusion reactors and other forms of nuclear energy. The only cost would consist in the paycheck of the military personnel which is a laughable small amount.

The military industrial complex is the one conspiracy that everyone seems to ignore. I guess it's no fun to rant and rave about something well-understood and documented. I guess partisanship comes into play too, which is the saddest truth about political parties today.
