Beef. The Source and XXL went at it. But how’d it start? Who took the L? Who came out on top? And most importantly what did it mean for the culture?

What really killed The Source's credibility was in '03 when they turned around and gave The Chronic 5 mics; ten years after the fact. They looked like clowns after they pulled that shit.

Online articles are way more accessible, but they don’t give you the same feeling of flipping through a magazine

Shout out to Ozone as well. Based out of Orlando and became one of hip hop's top magazines in the 2000s. The Source had beef with them too.

I'd still buy a hip hop mag if it was like the source back in the mid 90's

Perhaps the source started as a newsletter in 88, but was 100 percent full swing by 98.

This is way simpler than youre making it sound. XXL vs Source was pretty insignificant in the downfall of hip hop magazines compared to the takeover of internet blogs. In 1998, when no one even had a computer in their house, the only way youre getting hip hop news is picking up the source. Time passed, things changed and now you just have to pick up your phone and check DJ Akademiks page. Not really a loss in my eyes either, news on the internet is free, magazines were a sensationalized weekly money grab.
