White Female Rappers – Brooke Candy, Lil Debbie…….Karmin (now Qveen Herby) can spit some bars, but she doesn't sit in the Rap genre whatsoever, in my opinion.
The same way I hate that the kill is and get away with it, I hate how they sell this bull ? music to us. Men and Women. They act like the best thing you can do for yourself is he a THOT, drug dealer, murderer, drug attic. Throw it all away?
A picture of your edges would have been nice.
Funny how Nicki Minaj has carried the game for 10 years and everyone in these comment has yet to pay homage to her .
It's all of it at it the same time. If we had BALANCE I don't believe we would have this confusion.
I think what I like about Cardi B is she isn’t ashamed of her stripper past or what she had to do to pay her bills. She is refusing to feel shame for doing the thing that society clearly valued her for. It says something about this whole duality of be a sex object but also be ashamed of it. It’s lose lose unless you don’t play that game. And now that she got famous people want to say oh what about young girls looking at this when the adults are the ones that put that value on her, not little girls. I think it brings about the question of what are we actually doing to support the next generation of women to feel that that’s not where their value lies. Just not exposing them to women as sex objects? Please. That’s clearly a. Not enough and b. Ineffective anyways since it’s everywhere. If you don’t want your daughter to end up like that, don’t teach her to be judgmental of sex workers, teach her something else to bring to the table. And let it be her choice what path she wants to take. I don’t judge anyone who strips or does sex work to pay their bills. I don’t think it’s anti-feminist to lift up any woman who isn’t hurting anyone with her work. I think that to think that comes from the moralization of sex. I also think there’s an interesting dynamic to sex work which is expecting to be paid for your emotional labor which we as women are often expected to provide for free. There’s a lot of that I haven’t been able to put into words or unpack in my own head yet so I’m not sure if that was fully clear but I think there’s a lot more there.
Your comment on being conflicted about whether females promoting stripper culture is women's empowerment vs rebelling against the male gaze was super interesting. If we're being honest with ourselves, I think we internalize what men tell us that we want because to some degree, we want to be seen/valued by men since we've been conditioned to do so. Rewiring your mind to reverse this is IMMENSELY hard, especially when you see stripper rappers like Meg & Cardi benefiting immensely from this mentality. Now this isn't to say that everything women do is to attract men, but to deny that it doesn't play a role is SUPER unrealistic.
I believe women really want to feel sexy/be empowered and have control of their own sexuality, but our current society won't allow us to do that in a real, organic way (whatever the fuck that means). Sexiness isn't only about physical appearance, since someone so astutely said that beauty fades. There are some women that are covered up but they just EXUDE sexiness and confidence. I'm just as confused as you and everyone else on this topic lol. In my personal opinion, I feel like if you know you're sexy as shit, you don't have to show off your body all the time because your words, actions and overall vibes will do the work for you. Only the real ones get to see your goodies lol.
PS: I think all this depends on what you're trying to achieve. If you want to show off that you're body is hot shit, then show these bitches you're hot shit. If you are trying to command respect, then lead with your mind and slip them a little bit of sexy. I dunno… Sorry I rambled a lot at this point.
Thank you for this commentary and making me reconsider how I view female sexuality in hip hop and daily female culture.
Jermaine had the legendary Janet Jackson dancing like a peep show stripper in one of his videos. He also has a baby by a stripper. Who cares what he thinks? He’s mad because strippers took a good chunk of his wealth.
KRS-One! ??
I love how this has become a spot for good female rappers suggestions. I don’t think that Princess Nokia was mentioned. She’s of Puerto Rican descent.
I had to come back this video and say that after most of the dust has settled I really get your points now in full. Though I may have a teenage Stan situation for Meg ,the diversity in mainstream hip hop is just not there and is enforced by patriarchy. The conversation though has given me motivation to discover the lesser known dope female hip hop artists . I love female hip hop and the dopest for now won’t primarily be on the radio. Thank you again for taking your time to start these discussions, regardless of how the masses will take it ??
Couldn't it be both, objectifying and empowering? It is very paradoxical and confusing. These female rappers can embody empowerment and challenge patriarchy however, the male gaze will be there regardless. Sad to say but, it may even be needed in order to have the platform to reach the masses with their message. shrugs
Part of my issue with Jermaine Dupri specifically, is that women being sexual is being boxed as only "stripper rap". Is being a stripper the only way he can fathom a woman being sexual? A woman dressed sexy, is dressed "like a stripper", a woman talking about her sexuality is automatically a stripper? Is there no other context for a woman liking sex, liking to talk about sex, being sexual?
Sa-Roc is another great black woman rapper. Look up Sa-Roc Forever.
I think that Jermaine Dupree is right. A lot of female rappers do talk about sex. As far as male rappers go, they didn't ask him about his favorite male rapper. The good part is that he's willing to sign female rappers that have bars.
check out noname, she is a dope MC
Hypersexuality and sexual 'liberation' of women is being promoted and monetized because it suits the male narrative. The males in society benefit from this as it promotes promiscuity and sexual looseness in women and that is profitable for them. Obviously I see no near future where a woman rapper however talented, gets the recognition she deserves if she's rapping in sweatpants. It's just the sad truth.
I agree with what Jermaine Dupri said and also it’s a lot of trash ass no good people in the music industry now signing Garbage ass no talent people who are willing to do just about “ANYTHING” for money!, a lot of these new generation Garbage artist that are being signed by these no good ass men in the music industry are signing talentless people who don’t give a fuck about the craft at all! And they just a bunch of damn bed bugs to the music industry that’s willing to do anything for money while destroying hip hop!
It’s so many damn new Generation male “so call” rappers that are autotune singing/mumble rappin talentless dummies and a lot of new generation Garbage female thotie “so call”rappers it don’t MAKE NO SENSE!, a lot of there “so call” rap/flow deliveries are HORRIBLE! And a lot of these new generation “so call” rappers rap like they DON’T HAVE NO BRAIN CELLS IN THERE HEADS!, It’s JUST HORRIBLE!, A lot of new generation rap/hip hop music has become so DUMBED DOWN, BRIAN DAMAGING and DEMONIC! And I can’t stand when a rapper from the 90’s era say “they young, let them have fun” like rappers can’t have fun with using there actual BRAINS, like rappers can’t have fun by showing they have some actual “TALENT!, like rappers can’t have fun putting out some damn music that make sense! With dope DELIVERY /FLOWS, Like rappers can’t have fun with actually RYMING!, it’s crazy how some rappers from the 90’s era agree and like this mess that’s going on now with music, any rapper from the 90’s era to me that agree and like a lot of this dumbed down ass music that’s being released now are LAZY! and probably happy they don’t have to use there BRAINS as much anymore to put out a actual dope song with dope rhyming skills anymore, with out dope flows and delivery’s anymore, without just showing the world that they are UNIQUE artist in there own way while embracing that good TALENT to the world anymore!, happy they have the easy way out now that they can put out some dumbed down ass music now to sell and it’s destroying the minds of the youth!, a lot of the people in the music industry now who are in position to sign new artist basically don’t care about the craft anymore or have no genuine passion in there hearts about it. It’s all about just basically finding out how much money they can milk out of a dumb down artist, who looks good enough, that’s willing to give up sex and sell there souls
I miss the days when rap/hip hop artist all ALL TRIED BEING UNIQUE IN THERE OWN WAYS!, when a lot of rap/ hip hop rappers use to have there own sound, now a bunch of “so call” male rappers sound like a bunch of autotune mumble rap dummies! And a bunch of new generation female rappers sound like “rapping thoties” , nobody trying to be different/unique from each other, a lot of’em can’t PERFORM for SHIT ? a lot of the new generation rappers a lot of them just sound the same, a bunch of dumbed down robot dummies and I blame majority of it on the males who willing to sign anything because of looks and because of sex, instead of looking for actual legit talent, that going with that good feeling in there guts that someone has unique, dopness, potential blow up authentic talent in them. The music industry now for the most part is all jacked up to me now!
First of all…. you dope for quoting KRS ONE!!!!
I listened to Megan's album. I like it because she has a lot of good lines and I could feel her passion in her raps. It's very shocking to listen to though and I didn't even think I was that prudish. But I've always struggled with women making decisions that mirror that men would want anyway as a form of defiance. Yes, she should talk about sex on her own terms but it just feels bad to me.
Jermaine is 1000% wrong though, he hasn't done anything to foster or help the type of female rappers that he wants to see. And Cardi was funny when she said "oh thats the only thing yall want to hear anyway so it's your fault you don't see anything else". Well yes and no, she does have a point but the music industry does push who they want to the front and keep who they want to the back.
I feel your confusion because I realize I have a lot of baggage when it comes to pretty women or women who can rest in being sexual. I want to know if it condemn it because of my insecurities or because I'm really against it morally.
Hey Ti! Is your platform expanding into more of a hot-topics/commentary channel? I haven’t been getting much of your notifications lately (I’m not too sure why), and I just realized that your recent videos cover so much more than hair-care & lifestyle. Fun stuff!
I’m really glad your channel is finally getting the views that it should. Hope you continues to grow
Foxy Brown was ten times better than Meghan the Stallion currently. The city girls scare me. They are disgusting. DISGUSTING. No nuance.Cardi b succeeds due to marketing.Tierra Wack is amazing but too esoteric for the masses. I know Jean Grae and she IS amazing, she just doesn’t do well with visual art. It doesn’t sing to you.
Truth be told female rappers dont spit like they use too….I miss mclyte, queen Latifah, salt n pepper….. the standards has really dropped
Do a video about that blouse. It's good.
I agree. I'm glad you expanded your platform to talk about these kind of topics too. You should also listen to Youtubers like Chrissie.
You’re so interesting to listen to. I don’t have an opinion on this topic as I’m a 42 yr old suburban SAHM of two, but I love listening to you and your perspective on different topics. I know I’m probably not your target demographic, but I’m a fan nonetheless. ??
Its all trashy and ruins black Americans image. Even though Afrobeats isnt perfect as a black American our music has become too vulgar. My parents used to be able to listen to their parents music. Male rappers promote violence.
I want my sisters to be uplifted. However poverty is very disempowering I understand why they do this as rappers, even if ideally it isn't the most righteous/wholesome way. The very thing that makes us wholesome or valuable as women, is the same thing a lot of men want to exploit and defile.
Also when these come-up male rappers want to break into the market who do you see in their video light shaking ass or otherwise? BLACK WOMEN!!! ……AS SOON AS THEY GET THE COIN $$$ HERE STEPS IN BECKYELLA!!! No offense to white women but this behaviour is something I've noticed in the industry.
Black female promotion is for cheap production, struggle artists but once we get money bring in the whites and the foreigns or racially ambiguous women. This is also about survival and competition.
I learned to respect female emcees because I came up with hip-hop feminism….that asked us to explore all these questions. it asks us to ask deeper questions about class, exploitation, sexuality, capitalism, etc…..I see a place for all of these rappers in hip-hop. it IS frustrating that only the stripper rap is popular right now, but like y'all are saying so is drug dealer rap. rap is owned by so many white men still and men PERIOD. the fact that such a powerful man in hip-hop couldn't shoutout any really good female emcees should tell us all where their priorities lie. I can't put all the blame on rappers like Cardi because she's not in control of much of anything…….
I liv for these Ti talks ??
Do you know Sampa the great? I think she's a wonderful artist.
(Forgot to tell how I like your thoughtful exposés. Your point of view is mesured and you got nuance, which is not that common)
I think the thing that's unfair is the lack of balance, as you mentioned. There's not enough of bigging up the Dreezys, no names, Rapsodys, etc., On top of that they're all so one not. "I'm sexy. I can take your man. Money. Bang bang shoot shoot skeet skeet skeet."
Damn I missed it. What an excellent topic and it definitely needs to be addressed and discussed intelligently. You always come through Ti.
There’s always been people who make music for the messy masses. What we’re hearing is a reflection of how trashy this pop culture is. There’s always dope, thoughtful, intelligent and challenging music being made, ya gotta look for it!
Has Jermaine Dupree ever been a progressive thought leader? ?
Strippers have as much right to rap as gangsters. Shouldn’t let your day job define or limit you or your art.
I love Jean Grae and Mumufresh. ?
Bahamadia…Psalm One…Lin Que…Boss…I could go on and on for the women in Hip Hop that don't need to show ass to get their point across…I respect their hustle but there should be more of a balance… but like most things these days, one blazes a trail and thousands follow… then folks think that's all there is…
It's about money, not the music or lyrics.
Welp i like J. Cole for the same reason I don't want to hear bitches, how they do drugs, and I am rich type of mentality.
He was asked about female rappers, there aren't that many of them and their all talking about the same thing, the difference is there's alot of male rappers to choose from and there all not rapping about b.s.
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I'd love to see videos of you reviewing movies.
I was just watching videos from 2015 of the roundtable discussions and i just miss hearing your views ?.
Everything boils down to $$$ and power. It was okay for men to make money from objectifying mainly black women and leaving women in poverty, but when women make $$$ from the objectification it then becomes problematic…. it was probelmatic from the begining. I've heard Megan spit socially conscious content… no one is going to pay her millions for that because of the current environment of music. You will be an outsider if you show up to a gala in your pjs. I don't agree with the hypersexual activity because it promotes an unsafe environment in this current world. We don't have enough safety and security as a group to be as sexually liberated as we are or even want to be. There is no protection. Look at what JD said "women are…" "as opposed "men should…" knowing that they have created the industry to be what it is today. Is the onus solely on us?
I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY 9:30–10:09

The thing that pisses me off more is that if they asked him the same question about the male ones he would be able to point out the ones he likes nowadays. Even though the mainstream is pushing ppl he probably doesn't consider quality music on both sides his answer is so disgraceful since he is such an influential and iconic person in music in front and behind the scenes. It's sad that he is so out of touch and lazy to not be able to name any of the new girls( who imo beat out a majority of the boys last year bar to bar and project-wise) but acting like it's just "strippers rapping"(which there is nothing wrong with since we need diversity) when he should have just stfu and admitted that he doesn't pay attention to women rapping & isn't interested just like the same ppl who complain about ppl like Nicki and Cardi but won't support the ladies that are supposed to be the "opposite" of them.
I think he is speaking from a mans perspective. Like let’s be real…what man is going to identify with a song where the woman is glorifying how great her vagina is. Can we realistically see men singing along to these songs, if they were then we would also re-spark the conversation that men are losing their masculinity.
where is the proof that cardi doesn't write her own stuff? I hear that a lot but how do we know this for sure?
