The reason why Mayan and other prehistoric south American civilizations disappeared from America is most probably a vast catastrophe. But unlike picturized as sudden violent activity, it seems to have occurred over some span of time to allow these civilizations to migrate to other habitable regions across the world. That is why we see many ancient cultural connecting links between South America, Australia, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Far East and South Asia. This just not only relates to construction pattern and costumes but also the ideas about gods. The snake over head is just one of the examples.
