despite all of the negative comments, Rick's channel byline is "Everything Music" – not just elitist mathrock djentified nosebleed metal, not just holy grail classic rock, not just flannel flying grunge lords, not just PhD level music theory …
like it or not, music is music.
objectifying or ridiculing any music because you do not care for the genre is rather pedantic and infantile.
personally, i loathe pop music. i chose not to listen to it. however, my wife and 12 yo daughter love music that i don't.
doesn't mean i am gonna leave them over it.
ITS. JUST. MUSIC.
they don't really care for the metal i listen to. they really hate when i spin old school d&b. hip hop? forget it.
but, that is why i bought headphones.
so, before you get all keyboard warrior and start waving your opinions around, think about how your mom would feel if she read your comment.
Love you Rick but this song sucks!!!!
Bm,Am,E = BAE no wonder Mr baeto liked it
Interesting how Rick kept stressing “remember, they’re scientists” instead of saying they’re musicians lol
We've gone from fans of music singing "na na na" because they don't know the words properly, to a huge number of successful pop songs intentionally using "na na na" and similar baby sounds as a hook to get into peoples heads and get them singing it.
Sit in an office full of people with the radio playing, one thing you'll notice is that even when the opening lines of a song come on, people in the office will spontaneously start singing the tune from the chorus.
i'm confused… Should I like or hate pop music? Please tell me what to do, I wanna sound cool towards my friends.
Life is too short for junk food and junk music…and junk literature and junk art and junk fashion etc. What's missing is TASTE, discrimination. America has become a nation of JUNK….a junk culture. A lot of this started when they stopped teaching music in the public schools and we became a nation of musical ILLITERATES. That and advertising which panders to our worst instincts….the bottom line. To these folks we're all bottom feeders….so that's what we've become….well most of us anyway.
Those producers must be like:
Damn, we actually made something good by accident…
Nutritious Corey
Must confess never heard this song before, but instantly love it
You know what I loved? You asked your daughter why you liked the song And she gave you that tone.
Have you tried McDonald's? It tastes like total ass. I found the analogy funny.
The Pet Shop Boys are a good example of a pop musicians, who are also innovative songwriters.
Your kids are adorable, Rick. 🙂 Dylan was a baby when we were in the studio with you last. Love the vids! -Drew (from Halo Stereo)
8:22 imagine a crazy riff like this on pop radio
Dylan is a gamer
i feel you, Beato
you have cool kids and you are a cool parent
Ok, who was that keyboard player ripping that solo near the end of your video?
Yeah… no matter how much you explain this one I’m with Dylan on this one. Not a fan
I agree, performance + production = great song. Performance is melody + timing + harmony + rhythm + song writing.
You make it sound like the writers of the tune actually knew what they're doing, as if they deliberately employed certain harmonic principles to grab the listeners ears. I doubt it though, they probably just played around until it sounded good.
There goes a certain talent into writing a pop tune, I'm not doubting that, but there certainly is no musical knowledge involved in writing this stuff. It's not made with the goal of creating sophisticated high value music in mind (for the sake of making good music), but merely to generate a lot of income! I keep saying, if painting became a mainstream phenomenon, where people made millions of dollars, the same people would stop making music and start painting. It's not about the art, the art becomes merely a means to earn lots and lots of money. People who make this kind of "music" are not musicians, like the scientists developing McDonalds Burgers aren't cooks!
You are forgetting the interplay between what you call "snaps" and the 3 + 3 + 2 rhythm, that is a binary version of a hemiola, and is very addictive (the two together is called "habanera" rhythm and is present, among many other styles, in "reggaeton").
It remindes me of Dua Lipas New Rules?
I’m the same way…I listen to extreme metal and breakcore most of the time but I appreciate and candy quality and slick production of pop music.
But this don’t call me song is just….eh
Yes, it sounds good, it grabs you but… it's so sterile. (says the old boomer).
Hey Rick…kinda look like…Glen Frey from the EAGLES…lol ..you do a great job bro…keep it a rockin…jimmi Ray from BOSTON..??
I obsessed over New Rules by Dua Lipa in a similar way, albeit without your level of unique, extremely well informed and valuable insight. I wonder if there's any connection between production teams.
pop music ain't addicting to me. As a matter of fact, I hate it
No offense rick, but music should be a science in a consumer world? That has its places, but mostly music is an art, an expression of self, and when you have a bunch of, bluntly put, corporate funnel heads, how can music mean something? I don’t hear very much inspiration in most mega hits today, and how can there be when “scientists” throw a perfect song at them and expect to sell it as their own human expression. I feel like a lot of singers, especially women in music, sell themselves short by telling stories in their music that aren’t their own. I’m sure and I know many are talented or can become phenomenal but they’ll never get their if they just stand with a magic pencil as their shadow. I’m punk we have state champs, who have a fun pop rock sound, but it’s washed over with overproduction and it is lost in the writing process. Maybe it’s just another world but music is music for me, and I think it would be more important than some numbers especially if thousands of kids, and teens, and adults are watching closely. Disclaimer: I don’t blame any musicians for the decisions labels make for them. I know there is a lot of history with music labels being too handsy in musical choices for their artists for their own good, which would be a hella cool video. And thank you rick for all that you do, IN SPITE of YouTube and the copyright gods.
Rests make the subsequent event more emphatic. Basic “Reggaeton” rhythm underlying upbeat accents…don’t quite see genius but admit it’s well done; and a formulaic “science.”
Your analogy was spot on….. I am a rock, metal and blues guy. But have an affection for some EDM..
I admire Rick’s lack of prejudice and the willingness to embrace pop. As for myself, I really like Carly Rae Jepsen’s recent records as they have clever song writing. One thing I can’t past with this particular track is the overuse of what I call the ‘Shape of You’ rhythm…it’s been done to death in pop music!
Thanks for the great content you put out there, Rick!
There is nothing wrong on pop music appreciation…I am a musician, and I like a lot of styles from jazz to metal to classical to country to avante-garde…but when I want to feel timely and just act my age, I listen to trendy electronic pop music of any kind especially the 2016-present era versus 2008-2009 era because recent records has that modern upbeat electronic sound that I can't resist listening to.
Current pop music is junk
I love your appreciation of pop. As an ardent rocker, especially the alt rock kind, I have a soft spot for pop, especially yacht rock and some dance music. I totally agree with you, if pop is all you eat, you are missing out on some more challenging, more filling music. But, if you don't listen to a little pop, you are missing out on some good stuff. We need a balanced diet, and I think your approach is a healthy one. I hate listening to music reviewers who dismiss this type of music and use "pop" and an insult. I listen alternative, new wave, classic rock, punk, metal, prog, jazz, … you name it. But, I also enjoy a nice side of pop with my main meal!
Pop music fascinates me, because there's something downright Kafkaesque about dozens of clearly talented people collaborating for months on an end product that's ultimately just an investment.
The song itself has nothing to do with why the song was made — it was made because artists and producers needed money to survive, and the executives holding the purse strings wanted to make money back.
It doesn't ruin Pop for me, but it diminishes the sense of personal artistic intent to the point that I think of Pop songs as products made by algorithms. The human artists are basically just mechanical turks, filling in the creative work and human face that can't be done purely through marketing research.
Always thoughtful and interesting posts
What makes this song great, ep. 46, Mable 🙂
I love this guy. He knows melodies to such a deep level that he can even make today's 'music' (crappy screeching, autotune & smartphone drum pad knockings) sound scientifically crafted. ???
Junk food may be addictive, but it is definitely unhealthy. Makes you fat. Maybe it is the same with junk music?
weed?
I learn so much from your insight. Thank you!
Dude you’re a genius. I love music and would love to hang out with you and talk. Have you ever heard of Audio Playground in Orlando? I had a close friend who worked there and I would hang out and play a lot of their vintage synths… real cool place.
I like pop music to a degree and agree with Rick that a lot of the hate is unwarranted. However, I do feel pop has a problem with not giving people credit. This song is portrayed as being by Mabel, but we all know there was a huge team that worked on it. I guess this is true for all music in the industry- but it feels especially so in pop. I think a lot of people distaste with pop comes from this- a distrust because they know they are (in a way) being lied to
