This sounds AMAZING. Super smooth pinky swells too – what size pots are in your JM?
extremely good !
SHOEGAZE FOREVER ! !!!?
Cool to see someone demoing more obscure tones than the usual classic rock sounds. Heaven or Las Vegas was like nothing else I had heard when it came out.
duude, get to the point…
Holy WOW!
Gonna try and recreate this on Zoia! Brb.
Yessss! The long awaitet tribute to the Cocteau Twins. In my opinion Robin ist the Inventor of these sounds.
Clicked on a whim, straight to subscribe. Great video
Sooo.. how do we know if any cool effects came out for Namm 2021? Not seeing anything about it.
Now just toss in a fuzz and some reverse!
One of your best videos yet! I really enjoyed that – love the tone building videos you've been doing
Holy smokes, brother. I just replaced my old laptop extension speakers with studio monitors, and this sounded simply outstanding! Thanks ?
Thank you Stefan. As a big fan of this sort of music I thought you did a fantastic job of recreating the essence of what makes it so beautiful. Most importantly it made me plug in my guitar.❤️
Great video, but I wish you mentioned that Robin Guthrie used pitch shifting and a lot of overdubs on his records
in the end you will end up spending more money than your guitar costs…..
Are these riffs all original?
So funny how radical this is idea of stacking reverbs and delays is to people 40 yrs later. Most people felt this whole style was boring and depressing, all because they never got enough sleep. The perpetual slam of modern life has now made this a medicinal style for the masses to hop on claiming how they will cleanse your stress, life and soul……. Just sign up folks.

Important to note: Robin Guthrie is often described as using “big washes of reverb with long tails”, etc. For his work with Cocteau Twins, but he is on record stating that he wasn’t a big fan of big reverb tails and that most of the tones he got that people mistook for reverb was actually multiple delays in various combinations. His solo work in recent years has FAR more reverb than anything he did with Cocteau Twins in general.
Loved this Stefan another great video and the sounds were as always incredible !
Oomingmak …
victoriadream….
Can you please do a breakdown of the band The Marías?
this was awesome!! i would love it if you did some noise pop (candy claws / weatherday style?) tutorials!!
I might be wrong but Robin Guthrie didnt use reverb on the Cocteau twins
Lovely set up. Curious if the second delay pedal is going stereo out into the Meris pedal to achieve the ping pong action?
So many people out there recreating distorted marshall tones or finding the perfect big muff fuzz for floyd. Nice to see someone appreciating lesser acknowledged genres and the tones therein. Subscribed
Thanks for this.
My favorite genre and band. Thanks for the Danish recommendations. Excited to check those out.
Beautiful sounds! My ears thank you Stefan ?
Thank you fir nailing the sound! Would like to hear the same setup for Dream Pop with dark, analog effects!
Great video buddy ??
One thing you don't mention is that guitar (a Squier!?) and the amp setup. Curious. I've been trying to emulate CT sounds since like 1984 lol. I would pay money for someone to make me a Helix preset or set of presets for various Robin G sounds.
One of the best videos to date, Stefan, imho. I too spent formative years with these artists. We're back with the format of musical introduction featuring your playing, a spoken summary, building a sound step by step, achieving the result, and an epilogue to pull it all together. I love it when you do this. Thanks for the inspiration buddy!
The first go, before you added in the pattern delay, is totally the sound of Turnover on Peripheral Vision. Nicely done.
A very underrated pedal in the shoegaze/dream pop department is a compressor. Really helps with some of the more extreme self oscillations that some crazy (still beautiful) pedals can spiral into. Beautiful video as always though!
Thank you for making this ?
Yes Eccos!
Don't know if you were playing existing songs, but I really like the way you play.
Now my broke-ass self has to save some money:^)
awesome video, for someone who says he's not an expert. this is amazing and a perfect example of this sound!
Nowadays everyone is specialist in Cocteau Twins, I wish that was so in the 80's when their records were supposed to sell well…
awesome, it's like the sound from the soft focus patch on the yamaha fx500 or the loomer pedal 🙂
Incredibly cool sound, Stefan. I love your toneworks. Do it more often It is inspire to more play the guitar!
How about adding a compressor to this signal path?
yo Mew shoutout!! Frengers is my favorite dream pop album of all time
Did you make any modifications to your J Mascis Jazzmaster, or is it all stock?
That was really cool, thanks! You also need the new Patch & Tweak book lol.
so good!!! sounds amazing
Gorgeous work! Well done sir
Nice to see some love for Sleep Party People!
