This confirms my perspective I had/have for that "4 Your Eyes Only" album. You can feel the lack of inspiration in that album. That album sounded like a rough draft or a demo.

4 your eyes only was magnificent, it conveyed the love men have for their children. That gets thrown to the side too often in this world. I cried when I first heard it. The world's lacking, not you cole!

Too many people expected 4YEO to be similar to FHD. If you, in someways, detach 4YEO from any expectation you have from a Cole album and take it as it is, being it was an album meant to tell a specific story, you will notice how it was executed flawlessly. FHD changed my life but 4YEO has to be Cole's best body of work. Regarding his Tribune piece, I feel like he'll be finished with music very soon and spend the future building his label/helping his artists and maybe we'll get verses from him here & there, maybe even a project if were lucky.
Cole world doesn't cut it for me.

He’s in that spot Em was in from 2005 – 2008, Lupe from 2010 – 2015, Jay from 2007 – 2017, Nas ever since Life is Good dropped etc. It happens to the best. Can’t force it, just have to let inspiration find you
FHD is prolly the best, most well rounded… KOD is next because of the clarity of thought and delivery of his messages… then 4YEO for the story & impact…its if 2PAC coulda wrote an album dedicated to Brenda Got a Baby

Funny thing is how when discussing “Kendrick v Cole” saying Kendrick album’s were more consistent was always met with scorn by Cole fans. Glad to hear him clearly say he lacked a sense of direction on FYEO. disclaimer For Cole fans reading this I’m not saying “he’s trash,” merely saying it support why my preference has always been Kendrick because his bodies of work seems to be driven by clear vision & inspiration instead of forced material.
4 yeo hit me differently to me, I felt Cole was on another vibe only Kendrick and Joey could match.. I can see how others might not like that album but it was one I could listen to and just ponder on
