ABBA rules, of course, and the Deep Purple/Bee Gees mashup 'You Should Be Smoking' ('Smoke on the Water' meets 'You Should Be Dancing') http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLNjVvJAiCw is utter genius!

Pete Townshend was asked if there's one famous song he wished he'd written. He chose "S.O.S." by ABBA.

A big mystery to me was why Ritchie didn’t like one of Purples best short slow melodic blues songs (ha! the only one) When a blind man cries.
One of his best and to me most heartfelt solos.
They never played it live when he was in the band. However when Steve Morse played an elongated epic version on Live at Olympia it stole the show. So much power, dynamics and emotion.

The solo on Street of dreams is one of those succinct gems from Ritchie (like the solo tacked onto the end of Since you’ve been gone) . Just exactly what the song needed. Stone cold’s solo …. same.

I feel Ritchie is about to be re-evaluated as the equal of all the lauded British guitarists who were his contemporaries. You know …. the usual suspects who were more media friendly/championed by the literary oriented “music” press in the late 60’s and 70’s.

I love Richie and think he’s one of the greatest guitarists of the rock era but this interview definitely has shades of Nigel Tufnel 🙂

Why was ABBA uncool in those days?

Yes…I can relate to what he’ saying…at the end of the day he is a musician with harmonious sounds going round in his head. I used to consider myself a hard rock fan but, then again, I have ALWAYS loved melodious music and songs. In the 70s I accepted ABBA and felt proud they adorned the music world with their gracious sounds…as did The Carpenters.

But Ritchie, even your hard rock tunes were vary melodic, especially compared to other bands hard rock. That’s one of the things that set you apart from other guitarists and other bands.

ABBA are so good it's unreal. Feel very sorry about all those ignorant idiots dividing themselves against music culture. If I could just flip that switch off for you with some weed together with some ABBA. I'm sure of it. Nobody dislikes ABBA.
