I mean I’m a hip hop fan, but it’s obvious what he’s trying to say. When he says that hip-hop isn’t real music, what he really means is that he doesn’t like it, because for the most part rap doesn’t have strong harmonic characteristics or melodic lines (as the focus at least). He also doesn’t like the fact that, even though there are a lot of lyrical rappers like Kendrick or Cole, the majority of rap lyrics are just about fucking girls, doing drugs, and violence (all stuff he vehemently opposes).

Why is this even a debate? Get over it Shapiro, it’s a genre of music. I thought facts mattered more than feelings? For someone who is supposed to be so “logical” and “genius” he fails to realize that a majority of hiphop and rap is thematic, poetic, and thought provoking. Like any genre, theres bad rap and good rap. Stop whining already Ben, you’re embarrassing yourself. ?

Yes, rap is music, yes, Ben Shapiro is a moron. Rap, in contrast to something like classical music focuses more on rhythm than melody and harmony (while not necessarily excluding them). It takes pure talent to be able to perform as a DJ with turntables, etc, and also requires keen musical instincts. It is something that was pioneered somewhat recently from scratch, pardon the pun.

Ben Shapiro's real issue is the demographic of people typically associated with rap, and everybody sees this. An intelligent person, or at least a person who uses their intelligence, would instead say something like "In my opinion, rap isn't music." and then consider rational criticisms, and perhaps use this opportunity to broaden his/her horizons. Or, better, "I don't prefer rap music." Not punchy enough for Youtube noteriety though, I'm afraid.

Rap doesn't cater to people like Ben Shapiro, and that doesn't mean it isn't music.

This is sooo hypocritical because you put out back takes in almost allll your videos. Your opinion sucks ass on music. And you are not an artist so your opinion is lowered.

      Hip Hop is music. Sure.

It is a music built upon stealing the music of previous, accomplished musicians, and using culturally appropriated technologies to do so.

Every Tupac and Biggie hit was a straight rip of an already superb song with an egotistical, self destructive, fraudulent wankster telling your kids to be like them over the top, usually with some child molester droning inanely on the track at some point to ensure Royalties for life.

But serious musicians do not limit themselves to rapping. Very, very few rappers have any other musical talent or passion. The songs they write are egotistical, narcissistic and psychopathic nursery rhymes.

Ironically, the rapper Eminem, demonstrated there is room for a genius in the rap world, and at least one white rapper.

Hip Hop had it's Golden Era, everything since has been absolute trash. You can technically class it as music but that is no compliment or high standard. If I burp in time I make music.

Some so love music, they dedicate their lives to the perfection of a difficult, awkward, expensive, non-co-operative instrument.

We have seen the poorest of the poor, introduced to the Guitar with one string, become Jimi Hendrix, through pure passion and talent.

You cannot convince me that some rapper is a passionate musical talent they just never developed any musical ability in any other area apart from rapping. There is absolutely no excuse for this, Def Lepard have a one armed drummer. Yngwei Malmsteen had to re-learn to play the guitar having severed his lower arm tendons. Hendrix learned on an upside down wrong handed guitar, having been introduced to a guitar with one string he twisted the tuning nut to play around with. This is musical talent and passion.

Something merely being 'music' isn't any form of compliment or standard.

Ben Shapiro’s surface level, self-indulgent take on rap music is everything wrong with the idea of an “academic” approach to music. I took several college level courses on music and vocal performance, and it led me down the path towards a massive paradigm shift in the way I viewed music and art in general. The stuffy, stringent and condescending view that academia has towards music is in diametric opposition to what music truly is and what it truly should be: a beautiful form of expression that is one of the most unique and important aspects of humans as a species. The human tendency/desire to quantify, explain and categorize anything that doesn’t present its purpose upon immediate inspection is the most dangerous affront to music, and to art in general. Music, just like any other form of human expression, doesn’t need to be explained. It doesn’t need to be categorized and dissected. There doesn’t need to even exist a debate as to whether or not something is music. I don’t like rap at all; it simply doesn’t speak to me and it does very little if anything at all for me on an emotional level. And that’s okay. The reason that art exists in such a multi-faceted capacity is because everyone has a different way of expressing themselves and every person has a natural acclimation to certain forms of expression. When it comes down to it, the most enlightened way to view music or any other art form is to simply realize that it is one small component of the human experience that is simply unquantifiable. That should be incredibly liberating and freeing. Music existed long before we as a species began to quantify and explain things such as rhythm or melody or time signatures. And it will most likely exist long after as our understanding of these things shifts and changes. I think it’s quite telling that many of the greatest and most revered musical artists in history had very little, if any, knowledge of music theory. They simply wrote what came natural to them and it resonated with others because the fundamental truth of human frailty and imperfection was reflected in the art they created due to the lack of “perfection” and polish. So while Ben Shapiro may be an accomplished violinist and may well have an intricate understanding of the technicalities inherent in music theory, I highly doubt that he has the capacity to create anything that would appeal to a listener on an emotional, human level because of it. Which is made ever more apparent by his regimented and superficial view of what music is and what it should be.

What about contemporary jazz where there might only be percussion? Or what about the drum circle in marching band? It’s 95% rhythm, does that not make it music?
