Four years. She had been waiting for 4 years before finally taking that step: move out from that thick forest she now called home and meet people. Real people. It's not like someone was still looking for her anyway.
That morning, she and her furry friend set afoot in the direction of a small town. She noticed it when climbing a large tree. She had packed fire sticks, canopy blanket and a knife in her bag, with two wooden sticks she played music with tied to it.
After hours of walking, the lights had started to fade and she could hear owls hooting in a distance. She’d been walking now for an entire day and realized she needed a place to rest. Finding a tree and some open land, she realized it could be a good place to set up camp when all of a sudden, she hears it.
Fireworks! Clear as day, roaring in the sky. They look in the direction the sound came from, and right then a lighter sets off its journey towards the sky. It then blows up in a majestic flowery pattern of red and yellow.
She rushed to the origin of the lighter, brushing past a canopy of leaves and bushes. She finally comes to a stop at the edge of a cliff and her watery eyes lit up. And in them, one could see being reflected, a small village.
Chinese houses covered in yellow light. Electricity. Lighters rising to the sky. People! She cannot believe her eyes. People just like her.
People walking down the streets, celebrating, hugging each other. Kids munching bao, drinking noodle soup. Drums. A faint sound of drums. A dragon swirling across the street, yellow and red with a dangling mustache. It stops and rests, and three human heads emerge from under it.
She gasps and her eyes twinkle under the moonlight. This is the stuff her dreams are made of. She rushes downhill towards the village.
With every step, she could sense the air getting warmer and warmer. She comes to a stop and hides under the trees. In front of her is a small playground, and a group of children bursting firecrackers in it.
The children are just about as old as she is. Dressed in t-shirts and shorts. Clean clothes. Wearing conical hats. A kid lights a cracker in his hand and throws it as it bursts mid-air. They’re speaking a language she does not understand.
Unable to help herself, she rushes out of the bushes. She approaches the group of kids and waves at them. The kids turn around and stop bursting crackers. The expression on their faces changes from puzzled to shocked to absolutely petrified. “Nian!” shouts one of them, as a large shadow covers him. They flee from the scene, leaving behind their firecrackers and conical hats. She turns to find a giant figure panting, its enormous shadow expanding and contracting with each breath. She facepalms herself.
She then turns and starts walking towards the village. She picks up a hat that one of the kids had left on the ground, dusts it off and wears it. Walking outside the playground, she comes across a marketplace bustling with people. She turns in that direction and finds the shadow following her. Keeping a hand on its furry foot, she asks it to stop. "You can't follow me this time".
After a warm hug, she leaves. The giant shadow stands still for a while, watching her walk away, and suddenly she’s the 6-year-old girl looking for her mother. It then turns and starts to leave.
The streets of this little village smelled of dumplings. Chicken meat, pork meat, vegetable dumplings, being steamed and deep-fried by roadside vendors. Men and women, drinking and chatting under a string of red lanterns. She goes up to one of the dumpling vendors. Round vessels steam in it ear-shaped dumplings and baos. Her stomach starts to growl, and the vendor asks her if she wants one of those in an unknown language.
She nods her head, and he takes four perfectly steamed dumplings out in a bowl. He then fills them up with hot soup. She reaches out both her hands to grab it when he gestures “five” with his fingers. She drops her hands and looks down. The man sighs and takes the food back. She starts to leave but after a few steps, he calls her back. He hands out one dumpling to her and says “Nian Kuai Le”.
She wanders around the street munching on her dumpling. She cannot remember when was the last time she had such tasty food. The flavours ooze in her mouth and she decides to savour it slowly. A group of young men have gathered a crowd and are lighting up large-sized lighters together. Two of those go up in the sky and burst in multicoloured patterns of yellow and red and blue and green, as the crowd around them gasps. So does she.
She strolls about the village, famished and tired from all the walking. She takes a right in a by lane. The lane has no streetlights and the only light that comes is from the fireworks display. All of a sudden, through the booming of crackers, she hears someone scream. Up ahead, an old woman is lying on the ground. Two large, black dogs stand in front of her, their growling teeth shining in the moonlight. She rushes to the old woman’s rescue. She’s handled larger animals before. This should be no big deal for her.
She takes out her bamboo stick and stands in between the dogs and the lady. One of the dogs, raging with bloodshot eyes, is about to pounce on her, but one solid swinging motion of the stick sends him flying backward. He yelps and then runs away. The other petrified dog follows.
She helps the old lady up. The lady bows and thanks her. Her eyes crinkle when she smiles. She caresses the little girl’s head and asks her where her parents are. Her stomach starts to growl again. The old lady lifts her chin up asks her if she would like to come to her house but she can’t understand a word so she just smiles and run away.
The new year celebrations are still on. It is the last of the fireworks display and so the sky is filled with them. The display takes all kinds of shapes, from a dragon to a rat to a Chinese symbol. At one point she could swear she could see her friendly giant amongst the fireworks.
She runs towards the playground where she’d last left it. When she gets there, the shadow is nowhere to be seen. She calls out its name and runs down the streets.
Finally, giving up, she decides to walk back the old woman’s home, when all of a sudden she sees it in a narrow, dark lane, a giant, shadowy figure, munching on fruits and spitting the seeds out. The little girl, wearing her new hat, smiles at it. Behind her, the fireworks display is still on. Bright, incandescent lights of yellow and red spell out “Nian Kuai Le” in a purple sky. She had enough for today. It's time to go back home.
