Using a formula is what stagnates creativity, look at what is happening in the US market… Stay away from politics, it will poison the industry I fear.

It's hard to describe Kpop because there's so much more than meets the eye. It's easy to hate Kpop because there's so much negative stereotype around it but once you get into it, you can't get out.
Okay, that sounded a little sinister but like any music category, there's the good and bad. Kpop is just as manufactured as western music, they're just more open about it. And because it's "manufactured", the quality is on another level. You don't have to like it but I recommend giving it a shot 🙂

I absolutely love K-pop and probably feel that I won't be leaving it soon, but it definitely sometimes feels that the songs are more of "manufactured", they should give the artists a bit more space to be creative…

You just cannot "manufacture" music. Music is organic and it just as form of expression just like talking. A guitar player talks, say things, with his guitar. Same with the singing and the rest of instrument. Stop "manufacturing" music.

So Suk-Young Kim basically studies Kpop for a living? I once wrote a paper on globalization of Kpop, tied to the rise of South Korea, based on Psy getting the first 1 billion views on Youtube and it's such an interesting thing to see popular phemomenon through an academic lens. The Korean entertainment industry is a reflection of the Korean economy with its export oriented production and large chaebols operating in all sorts of markets. Besides, cultural exchange between Japan is such a switch in comparison to last century when South Korea restricted a lot of import, especially from Japan due to history. And it has shown that South Korea can act as a soft power by spreading culture where people look up to Korean culture, learning the language and appreciate their food. It's crazy to think a non-western culture can break through globally through entertainment only without being a global power. Theorists argue that this is one of the signs of the economic shift from the West to Asia.

Lastly, what I always miss in these kinds of reports is overlooking the impact in other Asian countries like how broadcasts of Kdramas in China and Taiwan fueled the first wave or even the succes in Northeast India. For instance, seeing how big Korean media is in Southeast Asian countries has shown me that not everything revolves around western culture as we often assume here in the west.

I don't like Kpop but I think it's better than all Western songs :3
because I like music not songs, if it has singing in it I will not listen for it OR I'LL GO OUT OF MY WAY TO REMOVE THE LYRICS

So let me get this straight, K-Pop labels completely manufacture these groups and idols, where they're literally pawns controlled by these labels, and people love these groups? Black Mirror anyone?

I'm sorry, I need to clarify that it's not only BTS's ARMY when it comes to social justice movement creation, but other fandoms have also been doing this since forever, for example, ELFs (Super Junior fans) as one of the "old" fandom in Kpop.

Other than that, I really like this video and how it exposed KPOP from non-kpop fans perspective.

okay last time I was here it was a video about astrology nd now what ? m both proud and surprised . this escalated rlly quickly ! tbh there is no doubt that Kpop has rlly established its own place in the music industry today . And what is more fascinating about it and is that the more it expands the more people get to know what is rlly like rather than stick to streotypes about it , which makes it wayyy easier on an important number of Kpopers today . Good times for you !

I think variety shows also helped for the “fanatic” side, well it did for me at least. My top two groups are on the top because 1- great music 2- amazing performances 3- the members personalities (and in general). As a fan watching them on variety shows makes me feel closer in a way
