This is not true, karna and duryodhana shared a great true friendship. Duryodhana always stood againt cast system.

Ultimate truth was duryodhana never befriended karna.He befriended his archery skills as he knew karna was jeoulous of arjuna and hated arjuna as bhishma and drona would never kill arjuna but karna will.However karna fans may shout but if duryodhana really beleived in equality then karna fans should tell how many sutas were given rights of education by duryodhana or even by karna after becoming king.They both were opportunist

At that time duryodhan may be was an opportunist but latter they became very good friend. Based on karna's only assurance Duryodhan dared to accept the invitation of war of kuruksherta that karna will always protect him. Duryodhan didn't convince about that he'll win the war even he had bhishma or guru dron with him. He only concerned about "i have my friend karna with me".
But karna was on wrong side. Because Duryodhan was adharmi.
