This is a great review of all the possibilities.  Newcomers who already own a PC might want to consider using a Software defined receiver to pick up all this and more like the RSP from SDRplay – see https://youtu.be/U3qvjjpzsQQ

I just Wished My radio could be that clear, you must have one hell of an antenna. All I get with mine is Mostly Static, And the channels I do get I can Hardly make out what they are saying, But I am New to this and only running the built in Telescoping antenna.
I have the Radio Shack DX-390

NEVER buy those $30 SW Radios on Amazon etc. They are VERY tiny and suck at reception. I bought a Grundig (german) for $40 from amazon.com which is usually $100.00
You want quality receiver when it comes to SW listening folks. After that a good antenna and ears is all you need.

As of almost Fall of 2013, I scan through the shortwave bands and R.G. Stair (Brother Stair) is buying their all their airtime. I heard that WYFR is off because Harold Camping of Family Radio out in L.A. is selling out due to Camping is too old now, if he is still alive. Brother Stair is almost 80 years old, so I give him about 10 years buying up all the time on shortwave station that he can buy. The rest of the stations I hear, I don't understand their language.

Hello Jan, I would follow Ten-Tec recommendations using outdoor wire safely clear of any power lines. See: spge 56 of assembly manual. I just talked to a fellow ham operator Bob, N5URL. He said he built his T1253 receiver using the "high sensitivity" option, and had great luck at a recent hamfest showing his buddies 20m CW reception with only 20 ft (6m) of insulated wire thrown over a fence! I use various ham antennas, like half-wave dipoles and quarter wave end-fed wires. 73 Lynn NG9D

      With kindest regards,

I bought a cheap "World Band Radio" today, cost me £5 from Tesco. Don't know what country you're in, but $100 sounds a little expensive…

@b5kalad Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception, plus External Plug-in Antenna. Sony list $170. Amazon is selling today with free shipping for $131. Read the on-line reviews. I like mine a lot. One feature is "selectable" sideband. If you want to listen to the ham bands, this will be very usefull (it cuts the interference dramatically, compared to radios that receive both sidebands). I use rechargeable batteries & it does well "off the grid" 😉

hello, I am looking to get a short wave but I don't know where to shop and what to get. I would like to have one that can run off "off the grid" during a long term power outage. Also, maybe second one that is portable.

      Any suggestions? Thank you,

Thanks. As a child, I wanted to construct a "Knight Kit Ocean Hopper". (That was a simple little regenerative shortwave radio sold as a kit). Now I made this similar Ten Tec receiver and felt like a kid again 😉 Best wishes to you in Germany. 73 de NG9D Lynn

Very nice video and demonstration. I didn't expect that such a simple kit receiver is capabable of such clean SW reception. If the set had only a more precise frequency readout… 73 from Germany

Great reception and well-composed receiver! I guess The first station on this video sounds like R. Portugal International.

Hi Sandy, Thanks – your comment on matching the antenna to the receiver is spot-on! A resonant or tuned antenna makes a "world" of difference!! 73 Lynn NG9D . .
