They should've started out as RMTV… And Billy Jean was labeled as a "Rock Song" and so was some of Prince's music before they started playing R n B music.
They try to make this sound like MtV was racist, but was it because they were racist or was it because record labels didn't want to spend money promoting black artists? Michael Jackson was unstoppable. No one has ever made videos like he did.
I loved it when MTV only played music videos, made musician-based bumpers, music-based shows, and live performances. Anything that was music. Those were the glory days of MTV. New wave, hard rock, R&B and pop ruled MTV in the 1980's. Then, Grunge and hip hop ruled MTV in the 1990's. Teenagers back then worshiped it as a revelation. Ridiculousness and Jackass are the only reality shows I liked, but I hate the MTV of today that airs a bunch of garbage reality shows. We are living in the dark days of MTV. I wish for MTV to return to their music roots for the sake of the music world.
This video did not age well the network in a very short span of time became completely irrelevant rallying on reality shows and programs that coasts no money to produce. They have completely abandoned the music video format all together allowing Youtube to become the dominant force in music videos. They don't do concerts anymore and their awards show are heavily produced heavily sanitized shells of what they used to be. In other words I give it another five years before they go the way of G4
For us that were around back then, Mtv was probably the coolest thing on tv. Well besides the rise of HBO and Showtime. These were good times. The reality of it was nothing like it is now. Now reality is edited full of drama. Back then it was screaming musicians on the streets talking to people. It's to bad Mtv sold out. Really to bad… It should still be ours.
Video killed the radio star, reality tv killed mtv and the video star and now its teen mom and ridiculousness 24/7. I miss daria, making the band, celebrity deathmatch, and wwe Sunday night heat. I loved those girls in danity kane. Shame they broke up.
I watched it When it launched with video killed the radio star. Watched it all through the 80s. And they started this reality tv stuff w that Puck fool. Who knew it was the beginning of the end. But boy did MTV run my teenage years.
Do you think the honchos at MTV can see YOUTUBE occupying the space they vacated when they started doing their human-filth-reality programming? Music videos are now on Youtube, sportsfans! Grunge was what killed ROCK! Anybody agree? At least today we have KPOP! That beats the "WHOREDOGS OF HORMONE COUNTY" any day of the week!
Can you guys please do MuchMusic history next I've been very curious and figuring out this for myself but I don't have the equipment or the editing tools necessary to do it on my own.
one correction, though: mtv is no longer relevant.
They should've started out as RMTV… And Billy Jean was labeled as a "Rock Song" and so was some of Prince's music before they started playing R n B music.

They need to change their name. Get rid of MTV, like spike TV did.

MTV is the perfect example of "If ain't broke, don't fix it".

Can You Do The History of "Nickelodeon"?
MTV music television
MTV launched
This video did not age well the network in a very short span of time became completely irrelevant rallying on reality shows and programs that coasts no money to produce. The 1980s was the only MTV era. It died in 1990.
Video killed the radio star, reality tv killed mtv and the video star and now its teen mom and ridiculousness 24/7. I miss daria, making the band, celebrity deathmatch, and wwe Sunday night heat. I loved those girls in danity kane. Shame they broke up.
NO MTV CRIBS!!!!!!
I watched it When it launched with video killed the radio star. Watched it all through the 80s. And they started this reality tv stuff w that Puck fool. Who knew it was the beginning of the end. But boy did MTV run my teenage years.
Mtv was and still is a great idea, but the good idea ended in the mid 2000s when the channel start to broadcast only shitty reality tv shows
So, we are going to act like the "Real World or Road Rules" didn't exist???….???
Man I really wished I experienced the 80's
People complained that there weren't enough music videos, so MTV got rid of them?
Until 2000 – I WANT MY MTV. Beyond 2000 – I DON'T WANT MY MTV.
What about Green Day?
So MTV was the YouTube of the 80’s. History keeps repeating itself ????
Do you think the honchos at MTV can see YOUTUBE occupying the space they vacated when they started doing their human-filth-reality programming? Music videos are now on Youtube, sportsfans! Michael Jackson's Thriller was the 1st video to dare go over 15 minutes.
The opening theme was played by future Butthole Surfers members.
The former surviving MTV VJs are now on either Sirius or iHeart Stream Radio. JJ Jackson died in 2000 of a Massive Heart Attack.
Reality destroyed MTV.
A fire in A Custodian's Closet spead into the official Set and destroyed it.
It was broadcasted in a basement originally.
A devestating fire destroyed the Original MTV set and they moved to Times Square.
0:20 Cyndi lauper!!!!
around the 6:00 mark of MTV's history on here is where I felt MTV went down hill or at least started going down hill.
Laguna Beachhhhhh
The Real World is when MTV jumped the shark
IConcerts joined the conversation
I want mtv back ….!!!!!!!!
